Entrepreneurs and independent business owners are always on the hunt for good press. The great digital migration of journalists has made it harder than ever to locate, let alone find the right media contact. After attending last weeks TEDxPoynter event in St. Petersburg, I can now tell you exactly where to look.
Twitter...
Yes Twitter, the short message service used to tell the world where you are, what your eating and who you are with has become the absolute best place to connect with media contacts. The conference kicked off Thursday evening with SreeSreenivasan's Social Media One Night Stand. Extraordnarily valuable, Dean of Student Affairs at Columbia University, Sree shared the state of the art for journalists use of Social Media. Presenters for the following days main event shared their insider tips for making Social Networking Work. Here's what I learned.
Journalists are always looking for experts, but not "Thought Leaders". That term might work well with sales prospects, but writers are looking for information. To create value for journalists, you need to become a curator of information. Sree's tweet ratio is 7 to 1. One tweet about what he is doing, seven about what others are doing, even if they are a competitor.
Like tweets, the session included sound bits of useful information like: Be a signal tower, retweet your critics, Twitter should be a good time, Update your bio box every few weeks, surface more content, start slow, be strategic.
Over the next few days I will be sharing more from the conference. On Friday I'll wrap it all up with a look at the trends I believe will affect our ability to conduct digital PR. Let me end with some resources shared during the conference.
