I was so close. I had just received an email invitation from Sears to join their very special community, Sears Real Voices, an Online Community to share thoughts about Sears. At first it made me feel special, as though they were really going to listen. All I had to do is fill out a survey.
I didn't realize the purpose of the survey was to qualify me as a member of their special group. I got past the old white guy with a Feb. birthday questions. I was doing fine until I answered one question wrong.
Do you work in Internet Marketing?
Instantly I became a KIA (Know It All). They said they were sorry, that quota had already been filled. I get it, they where looking for folks who were not marketing professionals. A backhanded complement to be sure, but why so rude? I went from feeling special, to feeling so small I could sit on the edge of a dime and swing my feet.
I guess Sears has enough of their own marketing professionals. Experts who know exactly which customers fit their survey requirements. The funny thing is, they could have humored me and just trashed my survey and never sent me another one. I would have still regards Sears as a time-honored veteran of the Department Store Wars.
Instead I can't help but wonder if their blunder will forever stick in my brain, to be resurrected each time I drive past my local store at Tyrone Mall. I say drive by because you are never, ever going to see me walk through those doors as a customer again. Hey Sears, thanks for listening to my voice.
Oh, one more thing, Departments Stores don't have shopping carts.
