The Three Kings Arrived Early This Year
The Three Kings Arrived Early This Year
One of the things I am most thankful for this year is for the gift of being present. If not for that, I would have missed an Opportunity Not to be Missed...
I almost missed their arrival. They looked more like workers than kings, more like men of action than men of faith. For no particular reason I chose Panera Bread as my Christmas Card workshop this year. For some reason my cards always turn out better when I write them around people and groups, listening to both Christmas music and the sounds of the season. While trying to pick the right "How To Celebrate Christmas" card from my how-to-live.com collection I heard the magic word, "Fostercare". I looked across the tables and saw Anthony, Tom and Eddie. Too far away to catch it all, I could tell the subject of their conversation was important by the way they were sitting. When the discussion of all the details for the new year were done, they prayed. For a very long time, each in turn.

The Gift of Being Present

One of the things I am most thankful for this year is for the gift of being present. I was ready as the kings got ready to leave. I walked over, introduced myself and Anthony invited me to join them. He confirmed, yes they indeed were involved in not only fostercare but the kindercare of a grandson. As I have done in every keynote, luncheon speech or conversation to every foster parent, medical society or fundraiser involving fostercare I simply said, "Thank you for making a difference in the life of a child". As a child I celebrated Christmas in many places, in many different ways. I remember being included each time. I told the kings that they may never hear the words "Thank You" from their kids, but to remember that each of them held it deep in their hearts, even if they were too scared to say it out loud.

An Opportunity Not to be Lost

Two decades ago while heading West to a Brothers Thanksgiving Reunion,  a news reporter asked one final question, "What do you want our viewers to know this Thanksgiving?"  I suggested that the holidays present a perfect excuse to reunite, reconnect and reconcile with those who were once close to you. No matter how far apart you might be, there is no distance between two hearts, My hope is you will be present for this opportunity. Merry Christmas
